Almaty is not the capital of Kazakhstan (that distinction belongs to Nur-Sultan to the north), but it is the country’s largest city and its undisputed financial and cultural center. It sits in the southeast of the country at the foot of the Tian Shan mountains, which rise dramatically behind the city to heights over 4,000 meters. On clear days, the mountains define the southern horizon.

Time between Moscow and Beijing

Almaty’s timezone creates an interesting regional network. Aktobe in western Kazakhstan is one hour behind. Nur-Sultan to the north is on the same UTC+6. Beijing, China, is formally on UTC+8 but its enormous territory means solar noon in western China is quite different from the official clock, a famously awkward arrangement. Almaty’s UTC+6 puts it comfortably between these different systems.

The city’s commercial rhythm is shaped by its double role: a domestic financial center and a Central Asian hub with connections to Russia, China, and the broader Silk Road network. Business with Moscow operates on a three-hour difference. Business with Shanghai operates on a two-hour difference.

Winter in Almaty is cold, with frequent temperature inversions trapping smog in the mountain-ringed bowl the city sits in. Summer is warm and the mountains offer weekend escape. The seasons are felt here more clearly than in much of the region.
