The timing, midday on a weekday, meant the streets and restaurants were occupied. The earthquake killed 185 people, concentrated in specific buildings that failed catastrophically.
The rebuilding of central Christchurch has been a multi-decade project. The Transitional Cathedral, made of cardboard tubes, and the rebuilt Cathedral Square are part of a reimagined city center that is still taking shape.
