McMurdo Station is the largest research base in Antarctica, operated by the United States and capable of supporting over a thousand people during the austral summer. Despite being American-operated, it runs on New Zealand Time, following Auckland and Manukau City: UTC+12 in standard time, UTC+13 during New Zealand’s daylight saving.

Christchurch as the logistical anchor

The reason is purely logistical. McMurdo’s primary supply chain runs through Christchurch, New Zealand, which serves as the Antarctic gateway. Every flight, cargo delivery, and personnel rotation passes through Christchurch. Using the same timezone removes one source of scheduling error in already complex operations.

Antarctica has no natural reason to prefer any particular timezone. At McMurdo’s latitude of 77 degrees south, the sun does not set from October to February and does not rise from late April to mid-August. The clock’s relationship to sunlight is broken for months at a time.

The station is named for Lieutenant Archibald McMurdo of the British Royal Navy, who mapped the area in 1841.
