Constantine sits on a dramatic plateau in northeastern Algeria, surrounded on three sides by the Rhumel Gorge. The city is one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in North Africa, with settlements dating back more than 2,500 years. Its clocks now run on CET, UTC+1, the same offset as Paris, Berlin, and Algiers, despite Constantine sitting geographically well south and east of the European cities that standard evokes.

Algeria adopted UTC+1 permanently in 1977 and briefly observed daylight saving time in 1980 and 1981 before abandoning it. The decision aligned the country with France, its former colonial power and still-major trading partner. This means Constantine’s clocks are geographically “fast” relative to solar noon, which falls around 12:45pm in winter.

Gorge, plateau, and the sun’s arc

At 36 degrees north, Constantine has meaningful daylight variation. Summer solstice brings nearly 15 hours of daylight; winter solstice drops to about 10 hours. The city’s stone-cut bridges and medina are busy from early morning regardless of season, with markets setting their own hours. The gorge creates its own microclimate: cooler in the canyon, windy on the plateau. Life here runs by the sun’s arc over the rock as much as by any official clock.
