Huambo is Angola’s second-largest city, situated on the central Bié Plateau at about 1,700 meters above sea level. It runs on West Africa Time, UTC+1, the same as Luanda and all of Angola. No daylight saving.

At UTC+1 and 12.8 degrees South latitude, Huambo’s solar noon falls around 12:25pm, a reasonable alignment. The high altitude gives Huambo a cooler climate than Angola’s coastal cities despite its proximity to the tropics.

Nova Lisboa and the colonial railway

Huambo was built by the Portuguese as Nova Lisboa, intended to become the capital of Portuguese Angola. The Benguela Railway, one of Africa’s great colonial rail projects, was centered here. The railway ran from the port of Lobito on the Atlantic coast through Huambo and across the continent to the copper belt of what is now Zambia and the DRC.

Railway schedules imposed industrial time discipline on a region that had previously operated on agricultural and pastoral rhythms. The station clock mattered in Huambo in ways it did not yet matter in the surrounding countryside.

Reconstruction after the civil war

Huambo was one of the most heavily damaged cities in Angola’s long civil war, which ended in 2002. The city has been substantially rebuilt and serves as the commercial and agricultural center of Angola’s central highlands, a region known for coffee and cattle.
