Iaşi is the largest city in northeastern Romania and the historical capital of the Principality of Moldavia. It runs on Eastern European Time, UTC+2 in winter and EEST, UTC+3, in summer. Clock changes follow EU convention in late March and late October.

At 47.2 degrees North, Iaşi has significant seasonal daylight variation: roughly 16 hours at midsummer and 9 hours at midwinter. The Eastern European timezone gives the city a solar noon around 12:30pm in winter, slightly later than ideal for its longitude, which is more suited to UTC+2 year-round.

The city of culture and universities

Iaşi is home to Alexandru Ioan Cuza University, one of the oldest in Romania, founded in 1860. The city is densely packed with cultural institutions: the Palace of Culture, the National Theatre, multiple museums. It has historically been Romania’s intellectual counterweight to Bucharest’s political and commercial dominance.

The academic calendar structures much of the city’s social rhythm. Semester schedules, exam periods, and the student population’s movement shape when restaurants fill, when streets empty, and when the city pulses.

On the edge of two Moldovas

Iaşi sits close to the border with the Republic of Moldova, a separate country that emerged from the Soviet Union in 1991. Moldova also uses UTC+2/+3. The border does not create a timezone change, but it creates a sharp political and economic boundary between two populations who share language and culture.
