Ibadan is Nigeria’s second-largest city and one of the largest in Africa, with a population that exceeds three million in the metropolitan area. It runs on West Africa Time, UTC+1, year-round, the same as Lagos and all of Nigeria. No daylight saving.

Ibadan sits about 120 kilometers north of Lagos on a plateau, at a higher elevation than the coastal capital. The two cities share a timezone but have distinct characters: Lagos is commercial and chaotic, Ibadan is the Yoruba cultural heartland, home to the University of Ibadan, Nigeria’s oldest university.

The Yoruba calendar and time

The Yoruba traditionally used a four-day week: Ojó Àìkú, Ojó Ajé, Ojó Ìşégùn, and Ojó Rúbó. This system, tied to market days and religious observances, ran alongside and eventually beneath the colonial seven-day week. Market days in Ibadan’s traditional markets still follow a Yoruba calendar logic that exists independently of the civil timezone.

University city rhythms

The University of Ibadan, established in 1948, shaped the city’s social clock. Academic terms, research cycles, and student life impose a structured rhythm on a city that had previously been organized around commerce and the palace of the Oba. The university’s presence made Ibadan a city that runs partly on an intellectual schedule: late-night seminars, early-morning lectures, examination periods.
