İzmir is Turkey’s third-largest city and the major port of the Aegean coast. It runs on UTC+3 year-round, the same as Istanbul and all of Turkey. Since Turkey’s 2016 decision to abolish winter clock changes, the offset has been fixed.

At 38.4 degrees North on the Aegean coast, İzmir has a Mediterranean climate: hot dry summers, mild winters. The city faces Greece across the Aegean. Athens runs on UTC+2 in winter and UTC+3 in summer, meaning it matches İzmir’s UTC+3 in summer but diverges by an hour in winter. Ferry services between the two countries must account for this seasonal difference.

Ancient Smyrna and modern İzmir

The city is built on the site of ancient Smyrna, one of the great cities of the ancient Greek world and a claimed birthplace of Homer. The city’s layered history, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, and Turkish Republican, means multiple historical calendars have structured life here.

The modern city was substantially rebuilt after a catastrophic fire in 1922. The new waterfront, the kordon, became the city’s social center: a promenade where the day ends with evening walks and seafood dinners running late into the night.

Aegean rhythms

İzmir’s Mediterranean character makes it Turkey’s most distinctly leisured city. Long lunches, late evenings, summer schedules that run past midnight: the social clock runs later than the formal working day. UTC+3 in summer means the sun sets well after 8pm, supporting an outdoor evening culture.
