Kano is Nigeria’s fourth-largest city and the dominant city of the Muslim north, an ancient Hausa city with over a millennium of continuous urban history. It runs on West Africa Time, UTC+1, year-round, the same as Lagos and all of Nigeria. No daylight saving.

Kano’s historical significance as a trade center predates the Gregorian calendar. The city was a node in trans-Saharan trade routes for over a thousand years, connected to North Africa and the Mediterranean.

Kano is a predominantly Muslim city, and the Islamic lunar calendar structures religious and civic life alongside the civil clock. The leather capital of West Africa

Kano has been a center of leather production for centuries. The Kofar Mata tanneries, still operating in the old city, use traditional dyeing methods in large open pits. The tannery schedules are tied to the leather production cycle: soaking, scraping, dyeing, drying. Each stage has its own rhythm tied to the material more than the clock.
