Kinshasa is one of Africa’s largest cities, home to over 15 million people in the urban agglomeration, sitting on the south bank of the Congo River directly across from Brazzaville in the Republic of Congo. The two cities are separated only by the river, making them the world’s closest pair of national capitals, yet they currently keep the same time: UTC+1. Kinshasa runs on Africa/Kinshasa time, year-round, no daylight saving.

The Congo River runs fast and wide past Kinshasa, one of the world’s most powerful rivers by discharge. The Stanley Pool stretch, where the river widens before narrowing again into the famous rapids downstream, was the reason for the city’s location. Steamboats could navigate upriver to this point from the Atlantic. The city grew as a river port.

At 4 degrees south of the equator, Kinshasa has almost no seasonal daylight variation. Dawn and dusk arrive within a few minutes of 6am and 6pm every day of the year. The rainy seasons (roughly March-May and October-December) structure city life more than any solar cycle.

Kinshasa’s economy operates around informal markets that run from before sunrise to after dark. The formal sector, concentrated in the Gombe district, follows more conventional office hours. Both use the same UTC+1 clock, but interpret it differently.
