Korla sits in the Tarim Basin of Xinjiang, an oasis city at the junction of the Tianshan mountains and the start of the taklamakan Desert. It officially runs on Beijing Time (UTC+8) like every city in China, but many residents, particularly Uyghur communities, use unofficial “Xinjiang Time” (UTC+6), two hours behind. The IANA identifier Asia/Urumqi reflects this reality.

The gap between official and local time is significant. In Korla in summer, Beijing Time sunrise is around 7:30am, but the sun is only rising because solar noon won’t come until nearly 2pm by the official clock. Uyghur residents who use UTC+6 have their noon at what is 2pm on the official clock, which aligns better with solar reality.

This dual-clock culture creates genuine coordination challenges. Government offices, banks, airports, and transportation run on Beijing Time. But many markets, restaurants, and informal businesses in the Uyghur parts of town open and close on what locals call “local time” (本地时间), effectively UTC+6. Knowing which clock a given institution uses requires local knowledge.

Korla is a center for the Xinjiang oil industry and a stop on the ancient Silk Road. The pear orchards in the surrounding oasis have been watered by karez irrigation channels for centuries, a system that operates on the logic of seasons and water, not clock time.
