Oran is Algeria’s second-largest city, facing the Mediterranean from the northwestern coast. Albert Camus set The Plague here, famously opening with the declaration that the town is “ugly.” This is a minority opinion. The city has a dramatic geography: the Spanish fort of Santa Cruz on the cliff above, the bay below, the Tlemcen mountains to the south. The light in the evening, hitting the ochre and white of the upper city, is very good.

Activity concentrates in mornings and evenings, and the waterfront promenade fills late in the evening when the sea breeze brings the temperature down.

Oran has a strong tradition in raï music, the genre that emerged from the city’s working-class neighborhoods in the 1970s and spread globally. The concert scene runs on its own late-night schedule.
