It sits on the Strait of Magellan, on the mainland shore facing the Tierra del Fuego archipelago. For centuries, before the Panama Canal opened in 1914, the strait was one of the world’s most important sea passages: the route between the Atlantic and Pacific for ships too large or cautious to round Cape Horn.
