Salto sits on the Uruguay River, directly across from Concordia, Argentina. Uruguay and Argentina share the river border here, and the two cities are connected by the Salto Grande dam. The dam, a binational hydroelectric project completed in 1979, generates power for both countries and has created a reservoir that flooded the original Salto Grande rapids. The clock on one shore and the clock on the other: Uruguay at UTC-3, Argentina at UTC-3 as well. The clocks match, but the countries don’t observe DST on the same schedule.

Uruguay uses Uruguay Standard Time, UTC-3, year-round. Uruguay observes no daylight saving time, having abolished it in 2015. Salto shares this fixed offset with Montevideo to the south.

thermal springs and agricultural economy

The thermal springs that bubble up in the Salto region have made the area a tourism destination. The Termas del Daymán and Termas de Arapey outside the city attract visitors from Argentina and Uruguay seeking the mineral-rich geothermal water. The springs maintain a constant temperature regardless of the season.

Salto’s traditional economy was agricultural and ranching, the Uruguay River plain supporting cattle and citrus. The thermal industry has added a new layer. The city hosts one of Uruguay’s most passionate football rivalries at Club Atlético River Plate of Salto, a name that causes some confusion with the more famous Buenos Aires club.
