Tomsk was founded in 1604 as a Russian fort on the Tom River, making it one of the oldest Russian settlements in Siberia. It became a significant administrative and trading center along the Trans-Siberian route, and then in the late 19th century developed into a genuine university city. Tomsk State University, founded 1878, was the first in Siberia.

The famous Trans-Siberian Railway bypassed Tomsk, running instead through what became Novosibirsk. The slight was profound: Tomsk lost the economic engine that the railway brought, and Novosibirsk grew to become Siberia’s largest city while Tomsk remained smaller but intellectually vibrant.
