Belmopan is one of the world’s newer capital cities, built from scratch after Hurricane Hattie destroyed much of Belize City in 1961. The decision to move the capital inland was driven by hurricane vulnerability, not administrative preference. Belmopan was designed with government buildings organized around a central square inspired by Maya city planning. That deliberate design makes it the only capital city in the Western Hemisphere explicitly modeled on ancient indigenous architecture.
