Guatemala City runs on UTC-6 year-round. This matches US Central Standard Time in winter. When the US shifts to daylight saving in spring, the clocks diverge: Chicago and Mexico City move to UTC-5, while Guatemala City stays at UTC-6.

Guatemala experimented with daylight saving briefly in 1973 and 1983, but it was not continued. The country sits close enough to the equator that seasonal daylight variation is minimal, and the practical argument for clock changes was never compelling.

High altitude and the highland calendar

Guatemala City sits at about 1,500 meters above sea level, in a valley surrounded by volcanoes. The Guatemalan highlands have their own traditional calendar. The Maya Long Count calendar, still observed in communities across Guatemala, tracks time in cycles and periods that have no correspondence to the Gregorian calendar or civil timezone.

In some highland Maya communities, the traditional 260-day Tzolkin calendar governs ceremonial and agricultural timing. Civil time and ritual time coexist, each serving different functions.

Central America’s timezone alignment

Guatemala sits at the western end of Central America’s standard timezone band. Belize, Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua all also use UTC-6. Costa Rica uses UTC-6 as well. The region is unusually unified on a single offset.
