Chinandega, Nicaragua · UTC-6 ☆

Chinandega is Nicaragua’s second most important economic city, situated in the Pacific lowlands near the Gulf of Fonseca. It runs on America/Managua: UTC-6, year-round. Nicaragua does not observe daylight saving time. The country has been on fixed UTC-6 since 1997.

Chinandega sits at about 12 degrees north latitude. Daylight is consistent year-round: sunrise between 5:30am and 6:30am, sunset between 5:45pm and 6:30pm. The fixed UTC-6 clock aligns well with this near-equatorial light cycle.

Sugar, peanuts, and the volcano landscape

Chinandega is surrounded by some of Central America’s most fertile volcanic soil. The San Cristóbal and Casita volcanoes loom over the city. The agricultural plain produces sugar cane, peanuts, and plantains. The sugar harvest season, roughly December through May, drives the most intensive commercial activity of the year.

The 1998 Hurricane Mitch caused catastrophic mudslides from Casita volcano that buried the village of Rolando Rodríguez and killed thousands. The disaster accelerated the region’s awareness of volcanic hazards and changed land use planning near the volcanic slopes.

The Gulf of Fonseca

The Gulf of Fonseca is shared by Nicaragua, Honduras, and El Salvador. All three countries use UTC-6. The cross-border consistency simplifies the maritime trade, fishing cooperation, and regional commerce that the gulf supports. The same clock runs on all three shores.

The time conversion from Chinandega to London puts London six hours ahead in winter, seven in summer when the UK observes BST.
