Campo Grande is the capital of Mato Grosso do Sul state in central-western Brazil and the main gateway to the Pantanal, the world’s largest tropical wetland. It runs on America/Manaus: UTC-4, Amazon Time, year-round. Brazil abolished DST in 2019, and Campo Grande has been on fixed UTC-4 since.

Campo Grande’s timezone is somewhat counterintuitive to outsiders: the city is east of Brasília but runs on a different, more western time (UTC-4 vs Brasília’s UTC-3). This reflects Brazil’s complex timezone geography rather than the city’s actual longitude.

The Pantanal and seasonal rhythms

The Pantanal, which begins south and west of Campo Grande, operates on natural cycles that dwarf the importance of clocks. The annual flooding, which covers up to 80% of the Pantanal from November to March, determines when roads are passable, when fishing is productive, and when wildlife viewing is optimal. Tourist operators and ranchers on the Transpantaneira route organize their year around this flood cycle.

At roughly 20 degrees south, Campo Grande has moderate seasonal daylight variation. Summers are long and hot; winters relatively cool and dry. The dry season from April to September is when most Pantanal tourism happens, because access improves and wildlife concentrates around remaining water sources.

The city itself

Campo Grande is a relatively young Brazilian city, its modern form dating mostly from the early twentieth century. It is flat, wide-boulevarded, and spread out. The indigenous Terena people have a significant presence in the surrounding region, and their communities maintain cultural practices organized around their own agricultural calendars.
