Castries is the capital and largest city of Saint Lucia, a small island nation in the Eastern Caribbean. It runs on America/St_Lucia: UTC-4, Atlantic Standard Time, year-round. Saint Lucia does not observe daylight saving time.

Saint Lucia sits at 14 degrees north latitude, where daylight is consistent through the year: sunrise around 5:30am to 6:30am, sunset between 6pm and 7pm. There is no dramatic summer extension of daylight to motivate DST, and the island’s economy benefits from a fixed, predictable clock that aligns with neighboring islands.

The coal capital and its harbor

In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Castries was one of the busiest coaling stations in the Caribbean. British warships and commercial steamships called here to refuel. The harbor’s strategic importance meant Castries was a prize fought over between Britain and France fourteen times before Britain finally secured it in 1814. The city bears those battles in its history, and its French Creole language and culture coexist with British administrative institutions.

The harbor remains active as a cruise ship port. Massive ships dock at the Pointe Seraphine commercial pier, and the rhythm of cruise arrivals shapes the commercial life of the city center: businesses and markets calibrate to disembarkation schedules.

The Nobel island

Saint Lucia has produced two Nobel laureates per capita than almost any other country: economist Sir Arthur Lewis (1979 Nobel Prize in Economics) and poet Derek Walcott (1992 Nobel Prize in Literature). Walcott’s poetry, deeply concerned with Caribbean identity, time, and history, makes the island’s relationship with colonial and post-colonial time a literary subject.
