Convert time from Chandler
Chandler is a city in Maricopa County, part of the Greater Phoenix metropolitan area in Arizona. It runs on America/Phoenix: UTC-7, year-round. Arizona (with the exception of the Navajo Nation) does not observe daylight saving time. This is one of the few places in the contiguous United States where the clock never changes.
Arizonaβs exemption from DST dates to 1967. The state legislature decided that in a desert climate where summer temperatures routinely exceed 43 degrees Celsius, an extra hour of evening sunlight was an unwelcome gift. The case for skipping DST here is the inverse of the northern latitude argument: rather than wanting more evening light, Arizona wanted less evening heat.
The tech corridor
Chandler is part of the βSilicon Desert,β a concentration of semiconductor manufacturing and technology companies in the East Valley of metro Phoenix. Intel, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), and numerous data centers operate here. These companies coordinate globally with operations in California, Austin, Taipei, and Korea.
The Pacific Coast uses UTC-8 in winter, UTC-7 in summer. Arizona is always UTC-7. The result: Arizona and California are the same time from March to November (when California springs forward to UTC-7). From November to March, California is UTC-8 and Arizona is UTC-7: Arizona is one hour ahead. Developers and operations teams at tech companies manage this floating alignment constantly.
The Navajo exception
The Navajo Nation, which covers a large area of northeastern Arizona, does observe DST, following the US federal schedule. This creates a situation where driving across northeastern Arizona involves passing in and out of DST zones. The Hopi Nation, surrounded by Navajo territory, does not observe DST. The result is potentially three timezone switches in a single drive through northeastern Arizona.
The time conversion from Chandler to London puts London seven hours ahead in winter, eight in summer when the UK observes BST.
