This is not by accident. Most of Mexico observes daylight saving, shifting between UTC-6 and UTC-5 for the central timezone. Sonora specifically opted out to maintain year-round alignment with Arizona, which also does not observe daylight saving. The result is that Hermosillo and Tucson are always in sync: when Tucson is at UTC-7 (year-round), so is Hermosillo.

The Sonora-Arizona economic integration

Sonora and Arizona have deep economic ties. Cross-border manufacturing, agriculture, and tourism flow across the border daily. The Maquiladora factories in Nogales, just across from the US border, employ workers on both sides. Keeping the same clock eliminates the scheduling headache of a timezone gap.

This is a case where economic reality shaped timezone policy. The Mexican federal government agreed that Sonora’s exception made practical sense.

Hermosillo sits in the Sonoran Desert, one of North America’s hottest regions. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 45°C (113°F). Outdoor work, from construction to agriculture, starts before dawn and pauses during the brutal afternoon hours. The city’s rhythm is genuinely early: markets open at 5am, workers are in the fields by 6am.
