Chita is the capital of Zabaykalsky Krai in Russia’s Far East, situated near the confluence of the Chita and Ingoda rivers in the Transbaikal region. It runs on Asia/Chita: UTC+9, year-round. Russia abolished seasonal clock changes in 2014.

Decembrist exile capital

Chita has a particular place in Russian history as a city of exile. After the failed Decembrist Uprising against Tsar Nicholas I in 1825, many of the revolutionary intellectuals and officers were exiled to Siberia. Chita became one of their main places of confinement. Their wives famously followed them into exile, giving up noble privileges to live in Siberia. The Decembrists’ presence introduced educated, reform-minded people to a remote region and left a cultural legacy.
