Coordinating trade between Canton and London, a 12-to-14-hour time difference depending on the season, was a practical problem that traders solved with correspondence, accounting for sailing time, and careful calendaring. The Pearl River Delta’s trade orientation meant that time coordination with the outside world was always part of doing business here.

The Canton Fair and the factory clock

The Canton Fair, held twice yearly, is the world’s largest trade fair. For one month in spring and one month in autumn, buyers from around the world come to Guangzhou. The fair’s schedule, synchronized with international visitors from Europe, the Americas, and the Middle East, requires constant timezone management.
