Kaohsiung is Taiwan’s second-largest city and its largest port, on the southern tip of the island. It runs on Taiwan Standard Time, UTC+8, year-round. Taiwan abolished daylight saving in 1979. The entire island uses a single timezone.

Kaohsiung sits at 22.6 degrees North, in Taiwan’s subtropical south. The typhoon season, from roughly June to October, is the dominant temporal force on the city. When a typhoon approaches, the government issues warnings in stages and schools and businesses close according to a standardized typhoon response protocol. The typhoon schedule interrupts the normal clock more definitively than any daylight saving change could.
