Osaka runs by the same clock as the rest of Japan, JST at UTC+9, but the city has always had its own rhythm. Where Tokyo is formal and hierarchical, Osaka is commercial and direct. The local personality type, the Osaka merchant tradition, is famous across Japan for its bluntness, its sense of humor, and its obsession with food. The local saying is kuidaore: eat until you drop. The restaurant neighborhoods of Dotonbori and Namba run until 2am.

Japan maintains a single timezone with no daylight saving across its entire archipelago. Osaka’s longitude is very close to the 135-degree meridian, which means the city’s solar noon is closer to the true midday than Tokyo’s, since Tokyo sits east of the meridian. The sun rises in Osaka roughly 7 minutes after Tokyo and sets 7 minutes later.

Osaka has been Japan’s commercial capital since at least the 17th century, when the Tokugawa shogunate designated it as the country’s rice market and distribution hub. The city’s identity was built on trade, and the rhythms of commerce still define it. The Kuromon Market has operated daily since 1902.

Osaka Castle and cherry blossom season

Osaka Castle, the castle rebuilt by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in the 16th century, is illuminated at night and visible from much of the city. The spring cherry blossoms around the castle grounds mark one of the year’s most important social occasions, when office workers abandon their desks to sit under the trees in the afternoon light.
