Centurion is a suburb-city in the Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality, about 15 kilometers south of Pretoria and 50 kilometers north of central Johannesburg. It follows South Africa Standard Time: Africa/Johannesburg, UTC+2, no DST. South Africa is one of the few countries in the southern hemisphere with a significant cricket tradition, and Centurion’s SuperSport Park is one of its most important Test venues.

South Africa abandoned daylight saving time in 1944 and has not used it since. The country’s latitude, between about 22 and 35 degrees south, gives it enough seasonal daylight variation to notice but not enough to justify clock changes. The ground has since become one of the faster, bouncier pitches on the South African circuit. Day-night matches under lights at SuperSport Park typically start at 2pm SAST and run into the evening, with the pink ball coming into play as the Highveld light changes.

Centurion exists in the geographic and functional space between Johannesburg and Pretoria, part of the Gauteng urban corridor that houses over 15 million people. The Gautrain rapid rail links Centurion to both cities, with the station near SuperSport Park. The commuter rhythm of Centurion is defined by this in-between position: a residential city whose workers travel north to government offices in Pretoria or south to corporate headquarters in Johannesburg.
