Gitega is in the Central Africa Time timezone (CAT/UTC+2), year-round with no daylight saving.

Gitega became Burundi’s official capital in January 2019, replacing Bujumbura on the shore of Lake Tanganyika. The timezone followed without change: Central Africa Time, UTC+2, no daylight saving.

The IANA database still uses Africa/Bujumbura as the timezone identifier for all of Burundi, including Gitega. This is a common situation: timezone names persist long after political changes. Gitega keeps the same UTC+2 offset as Kigali to the north and Kampala to the northeast.

Why the capital moved inland

Bujumbura, the colonial capital and commercial heart, sits on the lakeshore and was historically the more prominent city. Gitega is the geographic and historical center of the old Burundian kingdom, in the country’s highlands. The relocation was partly about national symbolism, partly about reducing the dominance of the Bujumbura region.

The two cities are about 100 kilometers apart. Moving the capital did not shift the clock, the timezone, or Burundi’s position in the regional time network.

Highland rhythms

Gitega sits at about 1,850 meters elevation. The altitude keeps temperatures moderate. Morning fog is common. The agricultural cycle dominates the rural areas surrounding the city: two rainy seasons and two dry seasons structure the year.

At 3.4 degrees South, day length is nearly constant year-round. UTC+2 keeps solar noon close to 12:05pm.
